The world population is living...working...vacationing…and adding to the most unprecedented plastic waste tide ever faced. Washed out on our coastlines in obvious visible form, the plastic pollution spectacle is blatantly on our beaches. You might think that it's from beach goers who are leaving behind their trash, but it's not... its from the over abundance of waste that we produce as human beings from all over the world. It mostly originates from where we stand: the land, then it makes its way to the world’s oceans. The production and consumption of plastics have continued to rise. According to The Plastic Tide, “The Plastic Tide is growing by 8 million metric tonnes a year. If nothing is done, it is estimated that this figure will rise to 80 million metric tonnes a year by 2025.”

The reason why there is an over-consumption of plastics and why they have become so attractive and popular around the world is due to a number of things.

Plastic is:

  • Versatile

  • Lightweight

  • Flexible

  • Moisture Resistant

  • Strong

  • Inexpensive

All over the world the statistics are ever growing, staggeringly. Tons of plastic debris is seen deserted every year, everywhere, polluting coastlines, oceans, lakes, and rivers.

Plastic Effects on Wildlife...

“As thousands of bird corpses rest on these beaches, piles of colorful plastic remaining where their stomachs had been. In some cases, the skeleton had entirely biodegraded; yet the stomach-size plastic piles are still present, intact.” - Coastal Care

Seabirds mistakenly eat plastic debris because of how similar they look to their own food. This is the case of other species as well.

What Can Companies and Individuals Do To Stop Plastic Tide?

I think that if countries classified the most harmful plastics as hazardous, their environmental agencies would have the power to restore affected habitats and prevent more dangerous debris from accumulating. If companies focused on cutting out the four most problematic materials, that would be a realistic first step.

According to Nature, the four most problematic materials that makeup thirty percent of production include polystyrene, PVC, polycarbonate, and polyurethane. That will start the decline of plastic waste and from their companies will start the role of switching to recyclable products.

What 3 Things Can You Do To Stop Plastic Tide?

  • Don’t litter

  • Only use reusable products

  • Recycle
